Monthly Update(s): Jan. '09
Two updates this month:
1 - We wanted to update everyone on Mel's progress:
We've been anxiously watching Mel progres with his kidney
transplant. Ken and I emailed Mel recently and have an
update. He's making progress and wants to thank everyone
for their thougths and prayers. If you'd like to keep in
touch with Mel, or just send along your warm thoughts and
well wishes, here's his email address:
mel.from.lockport@acsalaska.net
Here's a portion of an email I recently received from Mel:
"Dear BM,
Thank you for the email. No decision on the biopsy. My hope is that my coordinator can find the doctor who ordered the biopsy and get him to make a decision. Until then I am on the transplant list although on hold.
Otherwise, I feel fine. I still work a full week although work is slowing down as it always does in the winter. I'm even getting a little exercise. After the transplant, I need to get my ankle repaired. I plan on walking into the next Goose stock on two good feet.
Please feel free to write all this and anything you can make up in the CK newsletter. Thank you for spreading the word to so many friends when I am unable to do so. Please give special thanks to Wendy Landfear. Her offer to be one of my donors goes way beyond anything I can think of. I love her very much.

2 - First "Family Camp Weekend" in Spring of 2009
Here's a message from Matt Strusienski, the Camp
Director at CK.
"Dear Friends of Camp Kenan Members,
I wanted to inform everyone of a Family Camp Weekend
that I am planning to host at Camp Kenan this spring from
FRIDAY MAY 29 - SUNDAY MAY 31 to help us "kick off" our 85th year of YMCA Camping!. As some of the creators of Friends of Camp Kenan I am calling on you to help me get the word out about this to all the friends of Camp Kenan and your communities. Unlike Goosestock, camp will be charging for this event, but it will be a little more structured, 5 Camp Kenan meals will be provided, and there will be camp staff on hand to run activities such as Canoeing/Kayaking, Rock Climbing, Swimming, and High Ropes. A t-shirt of 85th anniversary may be included as well.
I think this is a great opportunity for past campers, staff, and the community to enjoy a camp experience with their whole family, especially those adults who have been saying to me for years, "I wish there was a camp for me!". I, for one, am very excited about the possibilities for this weekend and really want it to work, but I'm going to need help with getting the word out and getting families to come. I will be working with the YMCA marketing folks and market it with other camp materials, but the best way is word of mouth, so that is why I am starting with you. So please consider bringing your families and tell all your friends and neighbors about camp and what a great experience a family weekend at camp can be.
Peace,
Matt Strusienski
Camp Kenan Director
